Shingle, wind and the last hour

What this shoot is, and what the day asks of you.

Shingle, sea, big sky and wind. Shot in the last hour before sunset at Shingle Street, Aldeburgh or Thorpeness. Warm low light, long shadows across the stones, loose and unposed.

Straightforward and reliably good. It is the most conventional shoot on this list, and it is here because the results are consistent and the day itself is an enjoyable one.

Wardrobe is flowing and simple. Linen, knitwear, long skirts, bare feet on shingle if you can stand it. Movement helps on this one, so bring something the wind can catch.

The window is May to September and we work to the light rather than the clock, which usually means a late finish. Bring a coat. It is the Suffolk coast and it is always colder than it looks.

We shoot until the light goes and not a minute past it. Everything good happens in the last forty minutes.

Shot list

The frames I am aiming for. It gives you an idea of how the day runs.

  • Against the Sky
Low camera, you against open sky with the horizon dropped right down.
  • Walking the Shingle
Moving through the frame with fabric and hair going with the wind.
  • The Water Edge
Close to the sea with the light coming off it behind you.
  • Sitting on the Stones
Settled into the shingle, relaxed, warm light across the face.
  • Backlit Close
Sun directly behind, flare allowed in, tight on the face.
  • The Last Frame
Shot after the sun has gone. Cool blue light and a quiet end to the set.

Where and how to take it

Where the shoot happens and what to do if you want it.

Suffolk coast. Exact location agreed when the date is set.

This is a TFP shoot. Nobody pays anybody. We both put in the time and we both come away with images we want to use.

If it is a fit I will send you the full brief and we will sort a date. If it is not, I will say so rather than leave you waiting.

Every shoot on this list is SFW. If you are under 18 I will need a parent or guardian to confirm they are happy and to be present on the day.
