Gel, shadow and one strong colour

What this shoot is, and what the day asks of you.

Gelled studio lighting. One strong colour, sometimes two set against each other. Magenta against cyan, amber against deep blue. Clean background, hard shadow, bold shapes.

This is the fastest shoot on the list and the most controlled. Everything happens in the studio, nothing depends on the weather, and we can work through several setups in a session.

If your portfolio is mostly natural light, this is the one that gives it variety. Colour work photographs well on a grid and it stands out next to everything else a model usually carries.

Wardrobe is plain and neutral so the colour does the work, or committed fully to one matching colour. The whole set holds to a strict palette so the images read as one body of work rather than a gel experiment.

The discipline is in the restraint. Two colours done properly beat six thrown at the wall.

Shot list

The frames I am aiming for. It gives you an idea of how the day runs.

  • Single Colour Wash
One gel, flat background, strong simple pose. The anchor frame of the set.
  • Split Light
Two colours meeting on the face, with the line falling down the centre.
  • Hard Shadow Shape
A cut card throwing a defined shadow across both you and the wall behind.
  • Rim Only
Subject nearly black with one coloured edge describing the shape.
  • Colour on Colour
Wardrobe matched to the gel so everything collapses into a single tone.
  • The Turn
Movement in the shoulders and hair, with the colour holding the frame together.

Where and how to take it

Where the shoot happens and what to do if you want it.

Base Business Park, Unit 5 Allied House, Rendlesham, Woodbridge, Suffolk, IP12 2TZ

This is a TFP shoot. Nobody pays anybody. We both put in the time and we both come away with images we want to use.

If it is a fit I will send you the full brief and we will sort a date. If it is not, I will say so rather than leave you waiting.

Every shoot on this list is SFW. If you are under 18 I will need a parent or guardian to confirm they are happy and to be present on the day.
